What Are Rory's Travel Club Group Trips?
Since 2023, Rory's Travel Club has organised over 250 Group Trips to help like minded Travellers connect and go on Trips in Ireland or Abroad.
Basically, Group Trips are a structured way to travel with others, often organised around a shared itinerary. For those new to travel or looking for a more social experience, they offer a practical alternative to planning everything independently. This guide explains what is considered a group trip, how it works, and why many RTC Members choose this approach.
What is a Group Trip?
A group trip is a form of travel where multiple people join the same itinerary, usually organised by a travel agent or one of their providers. This can include transport, accommodation, activities, and sometimes meals. Rory's Travel Club organises over 150 Group trips every year, and has thus created a thriving community of travellers from all over the island of Ireland, and therefore, beyond!
If you’re wondering what is considered a group trip, it typically involves:
- A set departure date
- A planned schedule or itinerary
- A group leader, guide, or host
- Shared experiences with other travellers
A simple example of group travel would be a 12-day guided tour across Thailand where participants travel together, visit key sites, and follow a pre-arranged schedule.
With Rory's Travel Club, members have the option to choose and book a Group Trip that is either Fully-Guided (such as Thailand or Sri Lanka) or DIY (such as Costa Del Sol or Malta).
Fully-Guided Group Trip
For fully-guided Group Trips, a tour guide often manages logistics such as local transport, the itinerary and activity coordination. This reduces the need for individual planning and helps keep the trip organised. Meanwhile, with RTC Group Trips, Travel Agents usually manage the bookings of the trip, whereas providers organise the Hotels and Flights. Members usually prefer this option for Global trips and to have a structured holiday.
DIY Group Trip
Otherwise, there are Group Trips in Rory's Travel Club offers that do not have a Tour Guide or a set itinerary. Instead, members can organise their own activities, dinner plans and make their own schedule that best suits the group's individual needs without the need for a tour leader or guide. The offers will still have hotels and flights (and in some cases transfers) organised by the Travel Agents and/or their providers but it is entirely the member's holiday to decide what to do in terms of building their own itinerary.
Members usually prefer this option to have more flexibility.
How does a Rory's Travel Club Group Trip work?
Typically, people need to join our Group Trip Membership for €12 a year to become a member.
By doing so, members will be added to a email subscription list to receive emails of Group Trip offers. Our Group Trip emails will have a list of exclusive offers provided by Hotels or Travel Agents, and these emails will have the full details of the offer including price, dates, destinations, how to book, and other pertinent details. We cover a wide range of Group Trips, from European destinations, to weekend getaways in Ireland, or the more adventurous Global destinations such as USA, Asia, South America, or the South of Africa.
The members then need to contact one of Rory's Travel Club's trusted Travel Agent Partners (or book the Hotel) directly. Once they book they need to contact grouptrips@rorystravelclub.com to be added to a Whatsapp Group.
The Whatsapp Group is a crucial tool for Rory's Travel Club's Group Trip. The Whatsapp Group allows them to connect with other members, discuss the trip details, make friends, and share photos or other logistics. The Whatapp is there to help members before, during, and after the trip.
Members will then be invited on the Whatsapp to a Zoom Call 2-6 weeks before their departure date. These Zoom Calls help members find out Tips, have Questions answered by Lily who organises the Group Trips Whatsapps and Zoom Calls, and put names to faces from the Whatsapps.
From there, members can meet up officially at the Airport or Hotel and their trip begins!

Who typically goes on Rory's Travel Club Group Trips?
Group travel appeals to a wide range of people, not just one type of traveller. RTC Group Trips are for everyone!
Common participants include:
- Solo travellers looking for social travel experiences
- Couples who prefer structured itineraries
- Friends who want to travel without organising everything themselves
- First-time travellers seeking support and guidance
Around 40% of our Group Trips are made up of Solo Travellers.
Although often associated with solo travellers, group trips are not limited to them. Many people join because they value convenience or want to meet others along the way.
For those researching group travel for beginners, group trips can provide a clear introduction to international travel without the pressure of managing every detail alone.
What are the main benefits of travelling in a group with Rory's Travel Club?
We find at Rory's Travel Club that the benefits of group travel are largely linked to convenience, structure, and shared experiences. It is also the desire for members to connect and make new friends along the way.
Key advantages include:
- Simplified planning: Accommodation, transport, and activities are often pre-arranged
- Social interaction: Opportunities to meet and travel with new people
- Access to local knowledge: Guides can provide context and insight
- Cost efficiency: Group rates can reduce certain expenses
- Safety and support: Travelling with others can feel more secure, especially in unfamiliar destinations
- Make new friends out of strangers: People make friendships and close bonds on Group trips due to the shared experiences and the common desire to travel to a certain destination.
These social travel experiences are a major reason why people choose Rory's Travel Club group trips. Sharing activities and destinations often creates a different dynamic compared to travelling alone, and the Whatsapps that Rory's Travel Club creates for each Group Trip really helps cement these dynamics and allow members to connect.
Are Group Trips only for solo travellers?
No, group trips are not only for solo travellers!
While they are a popular choice for individuals travelling alone, they are also used by:
- Couples who want a structured itinerary
- Small groups of friends who prefer organised travel
- Travellers who want to join a larger group for specific experiences
The idea that group travel is only for solo participants is a common misconception. In reality, the format is flexible and suits different travel styles no matter if the Group Trip is fully guided or is a DIY one.
For those asking how to travel with a group of strangers, most organised trips are designed to make this easier. Activities, shared meals, and guided tours help create natural interactions without forcing members.
Rory's Travel Club, in addition to creating Whatsapps to help members coordinate and organise their trip together, has Zoom Calls around 4-6 weeks before the departure date of the trip so members can put names to faces and start to break the ice.
How are Group Trips different from independent travel?
For RTC Group Trips, the main difference between group tours vs individual travel is the level of planning and flexibility.
Group trips:
- Follow a structured itinerary
- Include pre-booked logistics
- Are led by a guide or coordinator
- Offer shared experiences with others
Independent travel:
- Requires self-planning for all arrangements
- Offers full control over schedule and activities
- May involve more research and decision-making
When considering group trip expectations, travellers should understand that group trips often balance structure with some free time. The level of flexibility depends on the specific tour (if the Group Trip is fully-guided) or if the group needs to make their own schedule or itinerary with other members in the same Group Trip.
Another factor to consider is small group vs large group travel:
- Small groups often allow for more flexibility and closer interaction
- Large groups may offer lower costs but less personal attention
Choosing between these options depends on personal preference, member's travel style, and travel goals.
Why are Rory's Travel Club Group Trips popular?
Group trips have grown in popularity in recent years, particularly in Ireland and the UK, where travel habits and lifestyles have shifted.
Several factors explain this trend:
- Busy lifestyles: Many people prefer organised travel that removes the need for detailed planning
- Rising solo travel: More individuals are travelling alone but still want shared experiences
- Cost awareness: Group pricing can make certain destinations more accessible
- Social connection: Travellers increasingly value meeting like-minded people while exploring new places
In both Ireland and the UK, there has been a noticeable increase in demand for group travel for beginners, especially among younger professionals and those taking their first long-haul trips. The structure and support offered by group trips make them a practical starting point.
This demand has also led to the growth of travel communities and clubs that focus on curated group experiences. One example at Rory's Travel Club is how we offer a mix of travel deals, hotel stays in Ireland, activity based Group Trips, and fully guided or DIY Group Trips. Our variety of Group Trips are designed to make travel more accessible and social!
For many Rory's Travel Club members, this type of model combines the key benefits of group travel (such as ease, affordability, and shared experiences) with the added advantage of being part of a wider travel community.
Final Thoughts
Group trips continue to appeal to a broad audience because they offer a balance between structure and flexibility, while also creating opportunities for connection. For those new to travel or looking for a different way to explore, they provide a clear and organised starting point.
