A Warm Welcome to Castlewellan
If you're looking for a hotel that combines boutique luxury with a fantastic location, the Hillyard House Hotel in Castlewellan should be high on your list. Situated in the heart of the town and just minutes from the Mourne Mountains and Castlewellan Forest Park, it offers the perfect base for exploring one of Northern Ireland's most beautiful areas.
From the moment we arrived, the hotel had a welcoming atmosphere. The stylish exterior gives way to a beautifully designed interior that feels modern while still retaining plenty of character. Check-in was quick and easy, allowing us to settle straight into our room and start our stay.
Spacious and Comfortable Rooms
One of the first things that stood out was how spacious the room was. It was beautifully presented with a large, comfortable bed, elegant décor and thoughtful finishing touches that immediately made it feel relaxing. Everything was spotless, and there was plenty of space to unwind after a day of exploring. It had the perfect balance between boutique style and practical comfort, making it somewhere you genuinely looked forward to returning to.

Cocktails and a Stunning Bar
Before dinner, we headed down to the hotel bar, Mrs Colemans and it didn't disappoint. The cocktail menu was excellent, and the drinks were every bit as good as they looked. The bar itself is beautifully designed, with rich colours, stylish lighting and plenty of attention to detail that creates a sophisticated yet relaxed atmosphere.
We also had the opportunity to sample Mourne Dew Irish Whiskey before dinner, which was a lovely way to experience a local product and added another layer to the evening. Whether you're enjoying cocktails with friends or a quiet drink before dinner, it's a space you'll want to spend time in.

An Afternoon Adventure
One of the best things about staying at Hillyard House Hotel is its location. Before dinner, we made the short journey to Castlewellan Forest Park for a paddleboarding session. It's only a few minutes from the hotel and offers countless activities, from walking and cycling to kayaking and paddleboarding.
It was the perfect way to spend the afternoon, adding a little adventure before returning to the hotel to relax for the evening. Having attractions like this on your doorstep makes Hillyard House an ideal choice for anyone who enjoys combining luxury accommodation with outdoor experiences.

A Seven-Course Dining Experience
Dinner was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our stay. We were treated to the hotel's seven-course tasting menu, and every course was beautifully presented and packed with flavour.
From the opening goat's cheese, tomato and basil course to the perfectly cooked fish cake topped with a poached egg, every dish showcased quality local ingredients and incredible attention to detail. The chocolate dessert was a particular standout, rich, indulgent and the perfect way to end the meal.
The tasting menu isn't just dinner—it's an experience. The pacing, presentation and flavours all came together to create one of the most memorable meals we've enjoyed in quite some time.

Live Music to End the Evening
Rather than heading straight to bed after dinner, we finished the night back in the bar, where live music created a fantastic atmosphere. It was the perfect ending to the day, with guests relaxing over drinks while enjoying local musicians in an intimate setting.
It's touches like this that make the hotel feel more than just somewhere to stay. It creates an experience where you don't feel the need to leave the property once you've checked in.

Breakfast Worth Waking Up For
After a comfortable night's sleep, breakfast certainly lived up to expectations. Alongside a generous continental buffet featuring fresh fruit, yoghurt and cereals, there was an extensive cooked breakfast menu to choose from.
I opted for the avocado and poached eggs, which were perfectly cooked and full of flavour. It was the ideal start to the day before checking out, and the quality matched everything we'd experienced throughout our stay.

My Final Thoughts
Hillyard House Hotel exceeded my expectations in every way. The spacious rooms, stylish interiors, exceptional food, fantastic cocktails and welcoming atmosphere all combined to create a memorable stay. Its location also makes it an excellent base for exploring Castlewellan Forest Park, the Mourne Mountains and the surrounding area.
Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, a foodie escape or simply a relaxing weekend in Northern Ireland, Hillyard House Hotel offers the perfect combination of comfort, luxury and adventure. From the first cocktail to the final breakfast, every part of the experience felt thoughtfully curated, and it's somewhere I wouldn't hesitate to return to.
If you're planning a trip to County Down, this is one hotel that's well worth adding to your itinerary.
