Tips for Your First Ski Trip: Everything You Need to Know

Hi Everyone!

Amy & Rónan here. Rory had mentioned we have a super exciting Ski Trip coming up, with over 170 members heading off. Heading off on your first ski trip is super exciting! But skiing can be intimidating if you're not prepared. Whether you’re worried about the weather, the slopes, or how to stay safe, having the right knowledge and equipment can make all the difference. Here are some tips to ensure your first ski trip goes smoothly and leaves you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Take Lessons - They’re Worth It!

While skiing may seem easy to pick up, when you click into your ski’s for the first time it may be a different story. We really believed everyone can benefit from ski lessons. Most ski resorts offer lessons for beginners, and while it may feel awkward at first, please don't be discouraged. A good instructor will guide you step by step, and soon you’ll feel more confident on the slopes. When you become more confident, you will start to enjoy the experience so much more!

Don’t Give Up - Keep Pushing Through

Skiing can be challenging in the beginning, and it’s normal to fall (a lot). The key is to keep going! You might get frustrated after a fall or two, but remember persistence is key. We have all been there, ready to kick of the ski’s & walk down the mountain - The more time you spend on the slopes, the better and more confident you'll become.

Find the Right Boots – Comfort is Key

One of the most important parts of skiing is having the right gear, and ski boots are at the top of that list. Uncomfortable boots can ruin your entire trip. When trying on your boots for the first time, make sure they’re snug but not too tight, and try on different pairs to find the most comfortable fit. Ski boots are meant to be stiff to give you control, but they should never hurt. Comfort and fit are crucial for preventing blisters and making your time on the slopes enjoyable.

Dress in Layers – Don’t Forget the Socks

Weather on the mountain can change quickly, so make sure to have layers. Start with a base layer to keep sweat off your skin, then add a layer for warmth, and finish with a waterproof jacket to protect against snow and wind. Don’t forget about socks—avoid cotton, as it retains moisture and can make your feet cold. Don’t forget your gloves & hats to stay comfortable all day.

Create a Group Chat to Stay Connected

If you're skiing with friends or family, it’s a good idea to set up a group chat before hitting the slopes. Mountains can be tricky to find your way and it is easy to get separated, so having a way to stay in touch is essential. In the group chat, share your plans and if you plan to split up at any point don’t forget to send your live location to keep everyone on the same page. It’s always a good idea to know where your group members are, especially in case of an emergency.

Don’t Drink and Ski

There is nothing wrong with grabbing a drink to unwind after a long day on the slopes. Skiing is a physically demanding sport and even small distractions can lead to accidents. It's best to hang up the ski’s for the day and grab the lift back down.

We really hope you find these tips helpful for your first ski trip! We can’t wait to hear all about it.

Till next time,
Amy & Rónan
