If you're looking for a relaxing getaway that won't break the bank, a weekend in Bordeaux could be just what you need. When I seen this DIY offer pop up in my Rory’s Travel Club emails, even as an employee I just couldn’t resist. With return flights from Dublin for two people at an incredible £66 and accommodation for two nights for two people sharing costing just £100, I did not hesitate to book this offer. This charming French city offers a perfect mix of culture, history, and exquisite wine without the hefty price tag.

Day 1: Arrival and Initial Exploration

We had an early start to make our way to Dublin Airport for a 7.30am flight. This was worth it as we had a full day of exploring ahead of us. Upon arriving in Bordeaux, we immediately got a sense of the city's rich history and vibrant atmosphere. Using the fantastic tram system, we made our way to our hotel to check in. Located just outside of the city centre only a 2 minute walk from both Jardin Botanique and the nearest tram stop, was Eklo De Bordeaux City Bastide hotel. Offering small yet clean and comfortable rooms, this was a budget friendly hotel that had everything we needed for an enjoyable stay. With our bags dropped off, it was time to start exploring Bordeaux.

Our first day consisted of sight seeing and eating. We visited Place de la Bourse, a stunning square that epitomises the grandeur of Bordeaux's 18th-century architecture and directly opposite, you'll find the Miroir d'eau, the world's largest reflecting pool. We enjoyed a traditional Sunday brunch costing £25pp at Books and Coffee which appeared to be a popular spot with locals.

Day 2: Wine, History, and Shopping

An early start was essential to fit as much as possible into Day 2. We started off at the Rue Sainte-Catherine, one of the longest pedestrian streets in Europe, lined with a mix of high-street brands, boutiques, and cafés. It's a fantastic place to find a unique keepsake or just enjoy some people-watching. We done some light shopping as we had to fit everything into our under the seat bag for the airplane (p.s. this held more than enough luggage for our 2 night trip to Bordeaux).

No trip to Bordeaux would be complete without indulging in its world-renowned wine. For a leisurely afternoon, consider a boat tour along the Garonne River. Our Yacht De Bordeaux 1.5hr boat tour costing 19 euro per person included a complimentary glass of Bordeaux wine and ‘Caneles,’ the most famous culinary speciality of Bordeaux. The boat gently cruises past iconic landmarks like the Pont de Pierre and the grand façades of the quays, offering a unique perspective of Bordeaux. It allowed us to relax and take in the scenic views of the city's historic waterfront.

A Weekend to Remember

While Bordeaux is synonymous with wine, there's so much more to discover. With its blend of historical charm and modern vibrancy, it offers an unforgettable experience, especially with such affordable travel options. Unlike any other city I have visited, I had no need to use any other transport other than an occasional low cost tram. With £66 flights and £100 for two nights' accommodation for two people, this trip proves that you don't need to spend a fortune to enjoy the finer things in life. So pack your bags, grab your partner or a friend, and get ready for a memorable weekend in one of France's most captivating cities.
